Film Review: Michigan State at Miami, 2021

I analyze an interesting game - layout, technique and performance - from the 2021 Michigan football game in Miami.

Some general thoughts:

Some thoughts

  • Walker continues to demonstrate his incredible vision and ability to dispel perspective. I haven't seen that much of the options, but with a rough cut it has to accept it. But it has to be ascertained whether OL can systematically make holes in the inner track and whether Walker can always take advantage of it.
  • Speaking of orienteering, they still achieved their goal in the race, at least quite well. I've seen them sweep the Miami DL a lot, aided by the amount of movement Miami uses forward (another reason to attack the edge in the middle makes sense), but not a lot of doubles or pure thrust on the inside. Pass Pro is a bit more difficult in this game, but that's to be expected given the exotic pressures Miami applies.
  • Thorne's presence in his pocket so far has been excellent and his short-range stance, even under pressure, gives players a chance to play. It should be noted that there are very few passes on the pitch. Is it a Miami security feature? It's hard to tell why most camera angles suck. But I think there were only two launches over 15 meters deep. Don't worry about hand strength at this point, but timing, readability, and accuracy can be a challenge.
  • DL continues to do its job. Very disciplined, especially in racing, especially in DE.
  • LB is the day of the tides. You see flashes of good things, you see the strain and physique of most of the band members, but the actual performance goes way beyond that.
  • The outer CB looks more comfortable for humans, but the inner shell is not. You get a lot of cover which is very safe, stand low and drive under it which basically means Zone (appears to be Cover 3 and Cover 4 MOD). We will see how easy it will be to mix Cover 1 all year round. However, one thing, if they were to continue with this strategy, the travel gear had to be clean.
