Inside the Playbook: Ohio State's Book and Run Scheme and Arrow/Slide RPO

Everyone knows the basic zone reading pattern. Lock zones (or one of several types of zones ) when the back lock is unlocked for QB reading. If DE breaks the stitch, QB releases and escapes from behind. When DE is in the house, QB gives it to RB, who works on the main inside.

The more mathematical and precise the defense becomes in the reading area, the more difficult this "reading" becomes for the QB. One option is to replace the read defender and the other option is to use additional defenders to change the block style .
